Mr Hämmerli, why was this research overview compiled?
Research in Switzerland is essentially driven by researchers' own initiative: They propose research topics and then offer research contributions on these topics at conferences and in scientific papers. There has never been a comprehensive overview of research activities in Switzerland. We also lack a focus on potential priority areas that are or will be important for Switzerland in the future.
The research overview represents a first step in this direction.
It was initiated and supported by the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). The SATW has revised it for the interested public and is now publishing it.
What do you see as the greatest advantages of the research overview?
It shows the diversity and scope of activities in Switzerland in the field of cyber security. The concrete benefits for Switzerland are currently still limited, but a coordinated approach and community building could have a much greater impact. More detailed and formalised work is expected to follow.
Which cybersecurity stakeholders will benefit from this research overview?
Basically all stakeholders, as this is the first catalogue of its kind. It will allow us to improve our networking, stimulate new ideas and develop a Swiss security spirit.
What personal insights have you gained from this research overview?
In Switzerland, we have a large number of fantastic experts in the field of cyber security. Start-up companies such as ublox or qnective, for example, show how capable we are of achieving a high level of success in Switzerland. We want to emphasise and promote this potential in order to boost the industry. Switzerland has the necessary conditions for excellent higher education.
What would you like to see in the next editions of the Research Overview?
More details and the full co-operation of those who are currently not particularly interested. The information in the first edition is based on self-reporting. A serious assessment of skills and funded projects by second and third parties would improve the Research Overview. It should also show more pure Swissness.
You are responsible for the SATW's cyber security priority programme: what is the aim?
There are four general objectives: 1. cybersecurity receives national attention and financial investment is encouraged/supported. 2. Collaboration between research and development is facilitated. 3. New expert networks are formed. 4. SATW's efforts in the field of cybersecurity are recognised and appreciated in Switzerland.
Cybersecurity harbours hidden dangers that are often underestimated and not tackled for financial reasons. The resulting damage is enormous - the WEF estimates it at a total of CHF 5 billion per year worldwide - and cannot be reversed once it has occurred. We are committed to timely action.
