How to use the power of AI to reduce the impact of climate change on Switzerland

Climate change is showing negative impacts worldwide and Switzerland is particularly affected - what can be done? More than 70 experts and scientists from 30 renowned Swiss universities, authorities and industrial institutions wanted to know how new key technologies and methods can make our society and economy more resilient - the result is a comprehensive study (white paper). Overall, the experts have high hopes for the latest developments in artificial intelligence (AI) in order to overcome the various challenges. A summary is provided in the accompanying factsheet.

In combination with AI tools, the latest measurement methods and technologies can deliver thousands of times faster and better analyses, predictions and images than just a few years ago. These tools and data are of great value for the common goal of climate resilience. In addition to powerful AI models and huge cloud computing capacities, in-depth expertise in climatology, geography and AI is needed to derive strategies.

The factsheet uses case studies in the field of CO2 emissions monitoring and the identification of urban heat clusters to show where the seven defined recommendations for action should be applied in practice.

White Paper

As part of activities associated with its Artificial Intelligence and Energy and Environment focus topics, SATW promotes projects in the field of artificial intelligence and identifies technologies that are important for climate neutrality and security of supply. This fact sheet and the accompanying white paper are the result of collaboration with IBM Research Europe - Zurich, Switzerland.

The project was launched with a kick-off workshop on 15 June 2023 attended by a broad community that included representatives of research, industry and government. During the workshop, the 50 or so participants identified important factors that require consideration in the context of the timely uptake of responsible and trustworthy AI for the purpose of creating a more sustainable and resilient future for everyone. In the following weeks and months, working groups of workshop participants and additional contributors discussed these topics in more depth and described them in greater detail. An editorial board (authors and project lead below) coordinated the whole content creation process and more.
