New publication: Green hydrogen as a part of our energy future?

Energy and environment 08:00

The conversion of energy systems to climate neutrality and security of supply presents major challenges for Switzerland. Hydrogen has a special role to play in the efforts to decarbonise the energy systems - especially if it is produced ‘green’, i.e. with renewable energy.

The new SATW publication, which was produced in collaboration with renowned, independent experts from the energy industry, provides an overview of the possibilities of hydrogen technology and applications and shows how hydrogen can be produced, stored, distributed and utilised in Switzerland.  It thus identifies the most important questions and recommendations relating to hydrogen for the current energy debate - for experts and decision-makers in politics, administration, research and business.

For hydrogen to contribute to security of supply and decarbonisation in Switzerland, the following conditions must be met, according to the experts:

  • A political roadmap and regulatory framework for the use of hydrogen
  • Needs-based infrastructure expansion of production, storage and transport systems
  • Clear, internationally harmonised standards to ensure safety
  • International cooperation and connection to hydrogen systems and networks in Europe
