Nuclear energy is often mentioned and discussed controversially as a potential element in the conversion of energy systems towards climate neutrality and high security of supply. With this factsheet, SATW provides an overview of the status and foreseeable developments of international nuclear technologies. Based on the third-generation reactor technologies in operation today, the publication shows lines of development that aim to improve safety and/or fuel cycles. Particular attention is paid to small modular reactors (SMRs). The relative technologies are described in terms of their technical characteristics and the resulting opportunities and challenges.
A classification of the possible contribution of nuclear energy to Switzerland's energy strategy is not part of this publication. This would require a broader analysis and a holistic view including economic, political and social aspects, as well as a technological impact assessment if necessary.
A series of further fact sheets is planned in order to provide insightson various technologies aiming at a secure and sustainable energy supply. In May 2023, an energy sector fact sheet on this year’s topic, "security of supply", has already been published.
